Epic Off-Road Adrenaline in Sintra

Daily Tour 6.5 hours Availability: 2019-01-06
Largo Vasco da Gama, 2710 Sintra, Portugal

THIS JOURNEY IS FOR…

Adrenaline seekers chasing Sintra’s wild side, with plenty of off-road 4WD adventure and unique, secret spots.

Get down and dirty exploring Sintra’s wild heart – with a cheeky side of culture and food – on this whole-day adrenaline-pumping journey. We’ve been exploring this crazy beautiful and mysterious mountain landscape since we could slip past mum’s watchful eyes. So trust us that to really know Sintra you have to go beyond the walls of its many palaces. That said, it would be rude to drive past the UNESCO World Heritage town and not share a saucy story or two before we dive into the forest.

Our restored ex-military vintage 4WDs look cool as hell but they’re also the best way to tackle the terrain in the wild, wild west. Our favourite unmarked secret trails will lead us to remote natural and built monuments that no other tourists ever reach. From untouched lakes to ancient hilltop convents, we’ll pull up at the coolest hidden gems and chase non-stop adventure in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. In summer, feel the breeze whip your hair as we crawl and bounce along dirt tracks with the roof off. In the cooler months we keep the roof on, turn the music up (real loud) and splash through puddles of mud as we swerve past house-sized boulders, pine forests and giant ferns.

After a damn good lunch at a cheap-and-cheerful village restaurant we’ll direct our 4×4 chariot for the coastline. Feel the sand beneath your feet and dive into the cool, salty sea (if you dare). Our secret beach is surrounded by incredible soaring cliffs. Before the day wraps up, we’ll head for the edge of the earth (or at least Europe) and snap a Polaroid memory.

★★★★★

“All of us began the day as strangers but ended it as friends. This experience had a way of pulling everyone together while creating a fun and adventurous way of seeing Portugal and learning about its amazing history. We would’ve never seen some of these places they took us to as much of it is off the beaten track.” – Annette, June 2019

Stop one

Jump in the back of our convertible vintage jeeps and prepare for a day of discovery. First stop, Lagoa Azul, literally blue lake. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles. Afterwards we’ll drive by another reservoir, Barragem do Rio da Mula.

Stop two

Hitting off-road tracks again, we’ll bounce our way to mountaintop Santuario da Peninha. The views from the 12th-century convent stretch as far as the eye can see – you’ll take in Sintra, Lisbon, Cascais and beyond. You’ll need a hot minute here to pick up your dropped jaw.

Stop three

Seems that convents have the best views, so Convento dos Capuchos is our next stop. The Fransican religious order built it in direct contact with nature.

Stop four

Chico’s dad would argue lunch is the most important stop of the day. Luckily he’s handed down his knowledge on where to eat. We’ll stop in a small village for a traditional Portuguese lunch (with wine, naturally).

Stop five

Enough mountains, let’s hit the coast! In the afternoon we’ll visit Adraga Beach, a patch of golden sand surrounded by high cliffs. Here you can dive into the refreshing Atlantic Ocean or chill on dry land.

Stop six

We’ll pull off at a random spot for our favourite views. It’s an amazing place to capture a photo, which is why we’ll snap a Polaroid of you to take home. You won’t find this secret viewpoint in any travel guide!

Stop seven

Time to reach the edge of the earth (or at least Europe). Cabo da Roca is mainland Europe’s westernmost point and scores a 10/10 for looks. After taking our time here we’ll drop you at a train station to finish the day.

Where you’ll be

Just 30-minutes from downtown Lisbon, we’ll spend the day exploring the wild, remote areas of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. From castles to the coastline our restored UMM jeeps will bring off-road thrills. We’ll explore mountain trails, visit a 12th-century convent with epic 360-degree views, dance on the sand at Adraga Beach, drop by mainland Europe’s westernmost point, Caba da Roca, plus stop for lunch and snacks along the way.
